Windows 98 Setup

Windows 98 is very simple to configure for use with E-List.Net. Please note that if your PC has never been on the Internet before you may need your Windows 98 CD Rom (or Diskettes) at some point during this installation.

Please select from one of the two following options:

If your PC has never been on the Internet before, then please click on the 'Connect to the Internet' Icon on your desktop (if You have deleted this Icon, you can get to the same place by selecting Start / Programs / Accessories / Communications / Internet Setup Wizard)

You now have a screen that says Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard. Please select the bottom option 'I want to Setup My Internet Connection Manually', then 'Next'

Select 'I Connect Through a Phone Line and Modem' then 'Next'

Now enter the telephone number of the closest E-List.Net location to dial into (here is a List.)

Now Click 'Advanced Settings' Connection type should be 'PPP', if not, please make it so. Now Click on 'Addresses' and make sure 'Internet Service Provider Provides One' and 'My ISP automatically provides a Domain Name Server (DNS) address' are checked. Do not fill in the boxes provided for Primary and Alternate DNS Server.

Now click 'Next' and enter your username@e-list.net and your password, making sure to observe the correct CaSe, and NOT to put any spaces in either of the fields, and click 'Next'

Now, Name the connection whatever you like (ex: E-List.Net Internet) and click 'Next'

Click 'No' when asked if you would like to setup mail, and then click 'Next' and 'Finish'.

You are now ready to connect to the Internet. Opening any Internet aplication such as Internet Explorer, or Netscape Navigator will cause the modem to dial and the connection to be established. Or if you wish to connect to test, open 'My Computer', 'Dialup Networking' and look for the connection name you just made.

If your PC has already been on the Internet or has dialup networking installed. Please click on 'My Computer' on your Desktop. Now click on 'Dialup Networking', and select 'Make New Connection'

Enter a name for your new connection to the Internet (ex: E-List.Net Internet,) Select your modem from the modem window (the default modem is automatically selected.) Then click 'Next'.

Now enter the telephone number of the closest E-List.Net location to dial into (here is a List.) then click 'Next'.

Now click 'Finish' to complete your connection setup.

You are almost done, just a few few more steps. Please click on 'My Computer', 'Dialup Networking' again, and now right click your mouse on the connection you just created (if you followed the example above: you named it E-List.Net Internet)

Confirm that the number you have selected is correct, and then click on the 'Server Types' Tab at the top of the window, and confirm the following settings:

  • Type of Dialup server - PPP, Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98
  • None of the advanced options are checked
  • The ONLY allowed protocol is TCP/IP (all others unchecked!)

Now Click on 'TCP/IP settings' and confirm the following settings:

  • Server assigned IP address IS checked
  • DNS Server Settings should use server assigned DNS.
  • Use IP header compression IS checked
  • Use default gateway on remote network IS checked

Now click 'ok'.

Next, re-open 'My Computer', 'Dialup Networking' and either double click or right click once, and select 'connect' on the icon you just created (ex: E-List.Net Connection), this will bring up the following screen, where you can enter your E-List.Net Username@e-list.net and Password (No Spaces! and please make sure to match the upper and lower cAsE exactly!) Make sure to check the box marked 'Save Password,' and please check the number as it appears. If you do not need to dial the area code, remove it.

Hit connect, and you are done setting up Windows 98, and almost online. In the future, Opening any Internet aplication such as Microsoft Internet Explorer should dial your modem and establish a connection with E-List.Net. (Opening 'My Computer','Dialup Networking' and clicking on the E-List.Net connection Icon will also initiate a connection.)
