File Transfer Tutorial

Sending, Receiving, and Downloading Files

Web Downloads

Let's say you are at a Web site called Saint Patrick's Day Recipes. The gracious creators of this site have compiled their favorite recipes in the format of Microsoft Word documents. Next to the name of each recipe is a link that reads download this recipe—a link that leads to a Word document file on the server, rather than to a Web page.

You click the words download this recipe next to Corned Beef Using Any Ingredients, and the Web server begins transferring the document to your computer. You are downloading a file. We'll talk about this process a little later in Tips for Transferring Files, but it's important to note that this is a one-way process. You can download files from a Web site using your browser, but you typically can't upload them.

(For more on how your Web browser and the Web server interact, you may want to read How the Web Works, in our Web browsing tutorial.)
