Building Your Web Site

Disk Space and Traffic Limits

There are two limits on your web site that you should be aware of: disk space and traffic allowance. These limits define how much data you can store on your web site and how much data your site can send to visitors. Exceeding these limits can render your site temporarily inaccessible. Let's look at each limit in more detail.

Disk Space Limit

You have an allotted amount of web space depending on the plan you choose for each email address and web files in your account. This simply means that the total size of all the web documents, images, and other files stored on a particular web space cannot exceed the allotted amount. Considering that a text-only web page might be only about four kilobytes (4KB) in size (1MB=1,024KB), this gives you plenty of room to work with. But if you store larger files on your web space (e.g., audio, video, or large images), you won't be able to store as many files as you otherwise would.

Traffic Limit

You have a traffic allowance  per month for each  web account. In web terms, "traffic" is the amount of data that your Web site sends to visitors who request pages, images, and other files.

For example, suppose your site contains a Web page that is 4KB in size and 10KB worth of images. When people visit that page, their Web browsers download the text and images to their computers for viewing. To deliver the text and images, your site would have to send out 14KB of data (4KB for the text + 10KB for the images).

A gigabyte is a lot of traffic if you consider that 1GB = 1,024MB = 1,048,576KB.

Note: If you find that you need more storage or traffic, consider upgrading your hosting account.
