Windows 95, 98, and ME :
Click on Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. In the Control Panel double click on the icon that says Modems . A Modem Properties box will appear. Click on the Diagnostics tab. In the Port column, click on the port on which your modem is installed and it will be highlighted. Now click the More Info button. This may take a few seconds. Once the Modem Info window appears look at the row that begins with ATI3. If your modem is a V.92 modem it will say V.92 on that line.
 
Windows XP :
Click on Start and the Control Panel. If you are using the category view click on Printers and Other Hardware and then click on Phone and Modem Options. If you are using the Windows classic view double click on the Phone and Modem Options icon. Once the Phone and Modem Options window appears click on the Modems tab. Now click on your modem to highlight it and click the Properties button. When the Properties window appears click on the Diagnostics tab and then the Query Modem button. In the Command/Response box scroll down to the ATI3 command. If your modem is a V.92 modem it will say in this line

 
How to talk to my modem with Hyper Terminal?

  1. Start the HyperTerminal.exe program (hypertrm.exe) : Click on START-> ACCESSORIES-> COMMUNICATIONS-> HYPERTERMINAL , then chose the HyperTerminal entry that does not have an .ht extension.

  2. This brings up a dialog popup. Enter a Name (like Modem-Com1). Chose an ICON (whatever you want). Click OK

  3. Click the selection arrow on the "Connect using" list box, and select the COM port your modem is connected to - not the modem name. When you select the COM port, the phone number to dial boxes are grayed. Click OK

  4. The COM port properties box comes up. For 56k modems, make sure that you set the Bits per second to 57,600 or 115,200. The other defaults shown here are correct. Click OK.

  5. You now get the HyperTerminal window : you are able to control your modem, test it and examine its diagnostics with commands. Type AT - you should get an OK back. You're ready to go!

 
How do I find out if my modem supports v.92 with Hyper Terminal?

First, connect to your modem with HyperTerminal. AT returns OK. Tape the following command line : ATi6 . It will display all the characteristics of your modem and show you if it is v92 enable.


Other commands nearly every modem recognizes :
ATs0 = # - # of rings to auto-answer after; if 0, disable auto-answer
AT A = Answer call
AT D = Dial
AT E# = Echo characters in command mode - where # = 0-no echo; 1=echo
AT H = Hangup
AT M# = Modem speaker: # = 0 - speaker off; 1 - speaker on during handshake; 2 - speaker always on
AT O = Go online
AT X# = Result codes / blind dialing - # = 0 or 1 to disable speed reporting, dial-tone detect, etc.
AT Z = reset modem
AT &F = reset modem to factory defaults
AT s6 = # - # of seconds modem waits before dialing after going off-hook
AT s7 = # - # of seconds modem waits for carrier after dialing
AT s10 = # - Durations in 1/10th second modem waits before hang-up after loss of carrier
AT s11 = # - Duration in milliseconds of tone dialing
AT s2 = ### - ASCII escape code character - defaults to 43 which is the plus sign ( + )
AT s12 = ### - Duration, in 50ths of a second, of guard time for escape code sequence (default = 50)
